Final Grade Calculator: What Score Do You Need on Your Exam?
Your numbers
You need 101.7% on the final.
Impossible over 100. That score is above 100, so the goal needs a new plan.
Once you know the score you need, use the study plan generator to make the plan to get that grade.
The formula
required = (desired - current x (1 - weight)) / weight
Use weight as a decimal, so 30 percent becomes 0.30. Worked example with a current grade of 80, a desired grade of 85, and a final weight of 0.40: (85 - 80 x (1 - 0.40)) / 0.40 = (85 - 48) / 0.40 = 92.5. That student needs 92.5 percent on the final.
Example scores
Three common cases with the same math the calculator uses. If your final covers a full term of material, the MCAT study schedule shows one way to spread review across many weeks.
| Case | Current | Desired | Weight | Needs | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Easy pass | 90% | 85% | 20% | 65.0% | Possible |
| Stretch goal | 80% | 85% | 40% | 92.5% | Possible |
| Out of reach | 85% | 90% | 30% | 101.7% | Impossible over 100 |
Frequently asked questions
What if my final is curved?
Use the curved score you expect as the required result, not your raw score. If your teacher adds 5 points to every final, you can score 5 points lower than the number shown here. Ask your teacher how the curve works before you rely on it.
What if I do not know my current grade?
Add up the points you have earned and divide by the points possible so far, then enter that number as your current grade. If some scores are missing, use a low estimate so the result stays on the safe side. Your syllabus usually shows how each part is weighted.
What final exam weight is common?
Many classes set the final at 20 to 30 percent of the total grade. Some finals count for only 10 percent, while others count for 40 percent or more. Check your syllabus for the exact number, since a small change in weight shifts the answer.
Can I still pass if the calculator says I need over 100 percent?
No, a score over 100 percent is not possible on a standard final. Talk to your teacher about extra credit or raising your current grade before the final. Then enter the new numbers to see a reachable target.
Is this calculator accurate?
Yes, the math is exact for a grade made of coursework plus one final. It assumes your current grade already reflects the correct weights for past work. It does not predict curves or dropped scores unless you include them in your inputs.
How is the required score calculated?
The formula is required = (desired - current x (1 - weight)) / weight, with weight as a decimal such as 0.30 for 30 percent. It solves for the final score that makes the weighted total equal your goal. The worked example below shows each step with real numbers.
